A deck can be a fabulous addition to an outdoor area, particularly where there would otherwise be a step down from the house, unlike paving that requires being set down below the damp course to prevent issues with moisture, decking can be built up to the same height as the internal floors, creating a safe transition from inside to outside with no step.

In high bushfire areas hardwoods are suitable depending on their density.

All natural timber deck coverings will require ongoing maintenance, if you can see yourself not having time for this there are some alternatives that look good and don't need any coating, such as modwood which is made from recycled timber and plastic milk cartons.
